After a day in front of the screen, many people are drawn to the outdoors. Whether for a jog, a walk or in search of the perfect backdrop for the next Insta story – there’s always a reason to take a stroll. In Berlin in particular, there are plenty of places that will make your outdoor heart beat faster. We present our favorite routes!
Walks along the banks of the Spree
The Spree runs through the whole of Berlin, so walks along its banks are an obvious choice. But we have a very specific one in mind!
Start at the Nikolai Quarter, where it’s best to take a look around first. Because somehow you rarely spend much time here, and a visit to this small district in the heart of the metropolis is like a short trip to another city. You can also take a look at the shortest street in Berlin. From the banks of the Spree, continue in a north-westerly direction along a riverside path that offers you some of Berlin’s most beautiful scenery. From here you can see the Humboldt Forum, Berlin Cathedral and, a little further on, Museum Island with the Bodemuseum as an absolute highlight. If you continue along this route, you will reach the buzzing Friedrichstrasse and finally the government district, where historic and postmodern buildings share the same backdrop. Here you can then return via the main station or the U5 underground line. Advanced walkers can also continue the route in the same direction and take in Bellevue Palace and the beautiful banks of the Hansaviertel!
Walk out of town
Another picturesque walk takes us a little further out into the Brandenburg countryside. Take the RE3 train to the historic Chorin station in around 30 minutes and immerse yourself directly in the Brandenburg countryside. From there, a picturesque hiking trail leads you through enchanting forests to the impressive Chorin monastery complex. This building is considered a masterpiece of northern German brick Gothic architecture and can be placed alongside other important buildings such as the monastery ruins in Mitte. The monastery complex not only houses a cozy café, but also an exciting permanent exhibition that sheds light on the history of the monastery, which was founded in the 13th century. After visiting the exhibition, you can walk back to the station on a second hiking trail or relax by the idyllic Amtssee lake before setting off on your return journey. Whether for hikes, tours or relaxed strolls – Chorin offers you the perfect combination of culture and nature.
The sightseeing route
If it’s your first time in Berlin or you have friends visiting who you want to flash with the full load of Berlin, the following route is ideal:
Once again, we start in Mitte, but now directly at the TV tower. After taking in the surrounding sights (Red Town Hall, St. Mary’s Church and Neptune Fountain), you’ll cross the Karl Liebknecht Bridge and continue along Unter den Linden. Here you can see all of Berlin’s splendor on a street that ends at the Brandenburg Gate. From here, you can either turn off into Tiergarten, marvel at the government district or stroll along Straße des 17. Juni, with the Goldelse on the Victory Column firmly in view.
Havel Tour
The next route is not only easy to walk, it is also ideal for admiring by kayak or boat on the water. Dismal starts in the north under the Stößensee Bridge, which is located directly on the Havel. From here, you follow the water southwards and can hike (or paddle) down the entire length of the Grunewald. If you need a breather in between, the scenic Grunewald Tower is a great place to stop. The Havelhöhenweg, which is around ten kilometers long, ends at the Nikolassee S-Bahn station, from where you can enjoy a relaxing ride home!
Walks for the ambitious
If you want to really burn off some energy, the Wuhltalweg is the perfect opportunity! The 14-kilometre route leads from Ahrensfelde train station south along the Suhle. After a short section through the city, the route along the small river takes you along the border between Berlin and Brandenburg. There are plenty of natural areas along the route and a detour to the Gardens of the World is only a short detour away. The marathon route ends at S Wuhletal, from where you can take a leisurely ride home.
