There’s no doubt about it: fall in Berlin is the perfect time to enjoy the city. Especially at the weekend, we sometimes want to enjoy autumn nature without the hustle and bustle of the city – so trips to idyllic, quiet places are the perfect plan. A hike along a 700-metre treetop path that offers a unique view, a visit to the largest pumpkin exhibition in the region or hidden forest retreats in the middle of the city – we introduce you to all these exciting destinations. In the south-east of Berlin, in the district of Treptow-Köpenick, lies Müggelsee – the city’s largest lake and a haven to enjoy a true autumn paradise with colorful trees.

A visit to Müggelsee
At around 7 km², it is Berlin’s largest lake, nestled between extensive forests, rolling hills and small bays. Especially in the fall, it offers a picturesque backdrop that shows nature at its most beautiful. The lake is surrounded by small stretches of beach, boat moorings and forest paths that invite you to take long walks. If you choose the lakeside path, you can walk directly along the water from Müggelsee Park. Ducks, swans and sometimes cormorants make their rounds, while the water reflects the beautiful autumn atmosphere. If you are prepared to walk around 7-8 kilometers, you can circle the lake completely and stop on small benches along the way to enjoy the view of the reflections of the trees in the water and almost fall into a meditative mood. A sweet picnic is perfect in the fall. Orange and golden leaves fall from the trees all around you, and the leaves rustle under your feet as you stroll through the hidden forest retreats – time seems to stand still at Müggelsee.

The Müggelberg
A small mountain rises right next to Müggelsee, which at 114.7 meters is the highest point in the city. Even though it is not a mountain in the traditional sense, you can enjoy the most beautiful views of Berlin from the treetops – from the glistening Müggelsee lake to the forests behind it and the Berlin city panorama in the distance. Discover the vibrant interplay of orange, red and gold, while the rolling hills look as if they have been painted. The ascent to the Müggelberg leads through enchanted forest paths where the leaves rustle softly under your feet. Along the way, small clearings or wooden platforms invite you to pause for a moment – unpack the hot tea from the thermos flask and enjoy a break in the midst of the tranquillity of nature. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view that makes every step of the ascent worthwhile.
