Germany has many a surprise in store when it comes to Christmas and winter highlights. In the Black Forest, for example, there is probably the country’s most magical Christmas market under a 40-metre-high railroad viaduct with a real Hogwarts vibe. Berlin also impresses with special winter experiences: from sleet in the Food Hall to the Nordic Fairytale Christmas, atmospheric seasonal specials await here. But that’s not all. Other winter destinations around Berlin beckon – from romantic boat trips and Christmas markets in open-air museums to a traditional market around an 18th century palace. And just 1.5 hours away from Berlin, a highlight that is unique in Germany awaits you: the only winter forest on a rooftop hut with over 400 real conifers. The Cottbus winter forest is located on the roof of the former “city gate” and offers an authentic forest setting high above the city.

Situated between the Blechen Carré shopping center, the Sprem shopping street, the Altmarkt with its baroque town houses and the Cottbus town hall, the only winter forest in eastern Germany has been open since 21 November. But that’s not all: this concept is also unique in Germany, as there is no other urban location like this on a rooftop. No decorative forest, no artificial trees – instead a densely planted, walk-in forest setting high above the city. This creates a real forest feeling that combines with the view over Cottbus in a special way. The more than 400 conifers are each more than four meters high and exude a pleasantly fresh scent. A small, rustic hut in the middle of the winter forest serves hot and cold drinks. You can enjoy these either on cozy seats in the open air or under cover in the alpine village. Here you can leave everyday life behind you, let your worries fade away and enjoy the winter atmosphere to the full.
You should definitely combine this with a visit to the beautiful Cottbus Christmas market, where Christmas music, the smell of mulled wine and barbecued food as well as festive lights make for an all-round harmonious experience. There is also an ice rink in Cottbus city center right next to the Post parking lot. Numerous Christmas specials await you in Cottbus throughout December – in the city center, at the Altmarkt and in Branitzer Park. The Cottbus Winter Forest and the Alpine Village can even be visited until the end of February 2026, extending the winter experience far beyond the Christmas season.
