Did you think you already knew all the beautiful swimming spots around Berlin? From the Plötzensee beach to the Orankesee beach, the selection is impressive—but it doesn’t stop with Berlin’s well-known beaches. A little further out lies a real hidden gem: Lake Wurlsee is located right next to Lychen in the Uckermark region and is part of the lake-rich landscape in northern Brandenburg. You’ll find a particularly lovely spot for swimming at Wurlsee Camping Lychen at Strelitzer Straße 5b, right on the lake’s clear waters.
Lychen is known as a rafting town and is surrounded by a total of seven lakes. One of them is Wurlsee, which is located in the Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park and is best known for its exceptionally clear water. With an area of about 92 hectares, Lake Wurlsee is one of the larger bodies of water around Lychen. According to the campground operator, it reaches a depth of about 28 meters at its deepest point.
You’ll find a particularly lovely spot for swimming at Wurlsee Camping Lychen at Strelitzer Straße 5b. The campground is located right on the lake and has been in operation since 1965. The grounds are intentionally designed to blend with nature and are characterized by tall pine trees and plenty of greenery. Right next to the campground is a shallow swimming area with sand and a sunbathing lawn. According to the operator, the entry into the water is also well-suited for families with children. Right next to it is a natural-style wooden playground set in the sand. You can also rent boats on-site to explore Lake Wurlsee from the water.
One of the Wurlsee’s most distinctive features is its water quality. Based on data from the past four swimming seasons, the official bathing water map of the state of Brandenburg rates the water quality at the swimming area as “excellent.” Measurements taken during the 2026 swimming season also showed no cause for concern. The underwater visibility is particularly impressive. During measurements taken in May, June, and July 2026, a visibility depth of 2.5 meters was recorded at the swimming area near the campground each time. In early July, the water also reached a temperature of 24.3 degrees Celsius. The Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park even describes Lake Wurl as one of the clearest swimming lakes in Germany.
If you’d rather not swim at the campground, Retzow/Wurlgrund offers another official swimming spot on Lake Wurlsee. Here, too, there’s an area with sand and grass where you can spend your day swimming. Even if you’re not planning to swim, a trip to Lake Wurlsee is well worth it. The water-rich landscape around Lychen is particularly well-suited for canoeing, water hiking, cycling, and hiking. The campground is also located directly on the Berlin–Copenhagen International Bicycle Route.
