Heading to a lake is always a good idea in the summer. From one of the area’s most beautiful swimming lakes with a natural swimming spot to a lake with emerald-green water —there are plenty of options in and around Berlin to cool off on hot days. But many swimming lakes lack that classic outdoor pool vibe. That’s exactly what the Orankesee Beach offers: With its roughly 300-meter-long sandy beach, a 52-meter-long water slide, and lush green surroundings, it’s one of Berlin’s most beautiful summer destinations and feels almost like a mini-vacation.
Orankesee is located in the Alt-Hohenschönhausen neighborhood in the Lichtenberg district and is one of Berlin’s most popular inner-city swimming lakes. Although it is surrounded by residential areas, the surroundings feel surprisingly peaceful and close to nature. Well-maintained parks and the historic Hohenschönhausen villa district stretch around the lake.
The lake was formed during the last Ice Age and today covers an area of about four hectares. Its shoreline is approximately 940 meters long, while the circular path around the lake measures about 1.3 kilometers. With a maximum depth of 6.7 meters, it is one of Berlin’s smaller lakes. Since Orankesee has neither a natural inflow nor outflow, it is what is known as a closed body of water.
The beach was opened as early as 1929 and is now one of Berlin’s most historic beaches. After closing following World War II, it reopened its doors in 1957 and has been a popular destination for Berliners and visitors ever since.
The centerpiece of the beach is the approximately 300-meter-long sandy beach, which was built up with sand from the Baltic Sea. There are also spacious sunbathing areas, beach chairs, and a separate non-swimmer zone, making the beach particularly well-suited for families. The 52-meter-long water slide, one of the beach’s most famous attractions, provides plenty of excitement. There are also beach volleyball courts, a children’s playground, and a snack bar serving food and drinks. It’s important to note that swimming is permitted only within the beach area.
It’s also worth a visit outside the swimming area. The roughly 1.3-kilometer-long loop trail is ideal for walks, jogs, or leisurely bike rides. Right next to Orankesee lies Obersee, separated from it by nothing more than a street. Together, the two lakes form the heart of the historic villa district and are among the most beautiful recreational areas in eastern Berlin.
