Whether it’s an exhibition on 130 years of film and television history in Germany’s oldest power station or an art installation by one of France’s most influential artists, Berlin’s cultural program has it all – there’s no chance of boredom here. But what is missing in the capital? There is simply no room for vast landscape parks and fairytale castles amid the hustle and bustle of the big city. To find them, we have to travel a little further afield, but not far, because just outside the city gates lie architectural gems in picturesque surroundings. Here we can relax and be inspired by history, architecture, and landscape before returning to the capital. And there’s one diamond among the castles that you shouldn’t miss: Wiesenburg Castle in Wiesenburg/Mark in the Hoher Fläming Nature Park (Brandenburg). Just 30 miles from Berlin and you’re immersed in a medieval atmosphere.

Wiesenburg Castle was first mentioned in 1161. Originally built as a castle complex to secure the border, it was of strategic importance due to its location between the Elbe and Spree rivers. In the 16th century, it was expanded into a castle complex. After being destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War, the property was rebuilt and finally underwent its most significant transformation in the 19th century by the von Watzdorf family. After 1945, the castle initially served as a school and boarding school, and later as an administrative building. Today, the castle is privately owned and is partly used for residential purposes. At the same time, selected areas are open to the public. The complex also serves as a cultural and event venue, offering space for exhibitions, events, and cultural encounters.

The castle complex is an impressive four-winged building with an irregular floor plan that reflects the long architectural history of the site. Medieval elements, Renaissance features, and historicist alterations from the 19th century characterize the overall architectural appearance. The oldest part of the complex is the keep. With a height of around 48 meters, it dominates the silhouette of Wiesenburg and is considered its landmark. Its viewing platform offers a unique view over the Hoher Fläming and the surrounding landscape.
Wiesenburg Castle Park is one of Brandenburg’s most important landscape parks and forms a central element of the entire ensemble. It covers an area of around 100 hectares and is laid out in the style of an English landscape garden – with flowing transitions between landscaped parkland, wooded areas, and unspoiled nature. The area is characterized by a special tranquility and vastness. It is notable for its great botanical diversity: rare trees from North America and Asia, old oaks, cedars, and magnolias, extensive rhododendron stands, as well as historic sightlines and ponds.
