One month to go until Christmas! Some are already feeling the X-Mas blues in full force, others are still waiting to get into the spirit. To increase the anticipation and shorten the waiting time until the best holiday of the year, Christmas market visits are simply a must. If the classic Berlin markets no longer excite you – and even the unusual options such as the one at the airport,on a boat on the Spree or in the Kreativhaus no longer offer anything new – then it’s time for something special. Deutsche Bahn offers various direct connections from Berlin to extraordinary Christmas markets, including Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt, famous for its world-famous gingerbread.
However, the title for the most romantic Christmas market in Europe goes to another …
Vienna’s Christkindlmarkt – it shines particularly impressively on Rathausplatz in the run-up to Christmas. Year after year, visitors travel from all over the world to experience the countless market stalls, the many attractions, the sea of lights and, of course, the romantic highlights such as the Herzerlbaum and Bussiplatz.

The enchanting Viennese Christmas market is an invitation to fall in love. Surrounded by a magically decorated park full of colorful lights, the atmosphere here is second to none. The heart-shaped tree in the center is a very special attraction: from nightfall, it is impressively illuminated every hour on the hour. Every half hour – from dusk until 9 p.m. – the Christ Child sends his big heart from a 13-metre-high tower over a taut rope across the Rathausplatz to the Herzerlbaum. The 75-meter-long flight gradually lights up the tree.
Decorated with around 200 shining hearts, the maple-leaved plane tree is a permanent fixture in the Christmas events in Rathauspark. It is precisely these hearts that symbolize the fact that you should open your heart at this time of year, as does the heart tree. You can even take a piece of this magic home with you: At the Herzerl stand, you can purchase a glowing heart for your favorite person or simply for yourself, so that love will accompany you throughout the festival.

Under the Herzelbaum is like under mistletoe: the Bussiplatz stands for friendly interaction between all people, but also for small gestures of love and confessions. A perfect backdrop to capture this romantic moment in a photo. The atmospherically lit nostalgic Ferris wheel also offers space for special moments, whether as a couple, with family or among friends. Love comes in many forms.
The Herzelbaum is not the only highlight at the Vienna Christmas Market. On the 150 square meter children’s ice rink in Rathauspark, the little ones can practice sledding. To ensure their safety, there are fun figures that they can hold on to until they manage to glide across the ice without any help. Best of all, the ice rink is free to use.
