When people think of a traditional animal shelter, they usually picture cramped kennels and dreary hallways. In Berlin’s Falkenberg neighborhood, however, visitors are greeted by a completely different scene. Spanning a massive 16 hectares—equivalent to about 22 soccer fields—is the largest and most modern animal shelter in all of Europe. Every day, around 1,300 animals find temporary refuge, safe shelter, and professional care here.
Futuristic concrete structure instead of dreary kennels at the Berlin Animal Shelter
What makes this vast complex so special becomes apparent at first glance. Anyone entering the grounds doesn’t feel like they’re in an ordinary animal shelter at all, but rather on the set of a spectacular science-fiction movie. Renowned Berlin architect Dietrich Bangert designed the complex using plenty of light-colored exposed concrete, clean geometric shapes, and generously proportioned water features.
This futuristic architecture is so impressive that the shelter has even served as a backdrop for Hollywood films in the past. But the design isn’t just for show. The open layout creates a bright, stress-free environment for all the animal residents. Spacious pathways and well-designed pavilions also ensure complete accessibility and optimal living conditions.
From dogs to exotic animals: a fascinating variety
In addition to the impressive architecture, the enormous biodiversity of the residents is particularly fascinating. The spectrum extends far beyond typical pets:
- Dogs and cats: In six dog kennels and four cat shelters, hundreds of four-legged friends are patiently waiting for a new home.
- Small animals and birds: Dedicated building complexes provide rabbits, guinea pigs, and birds with species-appropriate shelter.
- Exotic and farm animals: An exotic animal unit houses reptiles and monkeys, while pigs, goats, and sheep live on the animal welfare farm.
What ultimately makes this place truly unique is the combination of cutting-edge veterinary medicine, the pure passion of its approximately 180 employees, and a breathtaking setting. The Berlin Animal Shelter is thus no longer a sad place where pets are abandoned, but rather a state-of-the-art, vibrant oasis of hope right in the heart of the German capital.
