We’ve all been there: suddenly you find yourself unprepared for a Sunday or public holiday that has just appeared spontaneously in the calendar. And of course, right now your fridge is completely empty! Since even late-night shops often have to close on Sundays, this creates a problem that is being addressed by some supermarkets in the Berlin area.
These supermarkets in Berlin will supply you even on regular closing days!

A few supermarkets in Berlin are also open on Sundays and public holidays. These are mostly located in the city’s larger train stations and are therefore quite central. A (probably incomplete) list:
Azzam Supermarket on Sonnenallee
Berlin’s largest Arab supermarket recently opened on 2,000 m² at Sonnenallee 55 in Neukölln and offers everything you need for bulk shopping – from halal meat to fruit and vegetables to spices, oriental sweets, baked goods, and drugstore items. The new Azzam branch is the largest of its kind in the capital. Conveniently, it is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Learn more about this supermarket!
Edeka at Friedrichstraße Station
Here you can stock up on everything you need on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is also open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Edeka at Lichtenberg Station
Here, too, you can buy everything you need on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is also open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Edeka at Südkreuz Station
There is also an Edeka store at Südkreuz that is open on Sundays. Here you can shop from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Hit-Ullrich at Zoo Station
The almost legendary supermarket in the underpass of Zoo Station is also open on Sundays and public holidays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. However, special opening hours apply around the turn of the year. You can shop there on December 31 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on New Year’s Day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Penny at Ostbahnhof
Here you can shop daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., but on December 31, the market is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, opening hours may vary on public holidays!
Rewe at Hauptbahnhof
Rewe’s most stressful branch in Berlin is located on the first basement level of the main station. Once you’ve madeyour way through the labyrinthine station ,you canstock up on groceries here on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Sundays, however, it doesn’t open until 8 a.m.! On New Year’s Eve, the market is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on New Year’s Day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Rewe at Ostbahnhof
The branch at Ostbahnhof is a gem for all night owls, because here you can shop daily from 6 a.m. to midnight! On New Year’s Eve, however, the branch closes at 2 p.m., and on January 1, you can shop from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Rewe at BER Airport
In the basement of Terminal 1, you can stock up on everything your heart (or stomach) desires 24/7. On December 31, however, the store closes at 4 p.m., only to reopen on New Year’s Day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. to provide you with the essentials.
Vitalia health food store at Friedrichstraße station
In addition to the aforementioned Edeka, the shopping station also has a health food store. It is open every day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Denns organic market in the Gesundbrunnen, Ostkreuz, and Zoo stations
Organic market fans can also rely on their organic market in three Berlin stations on Sundays. These are open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. And that includes Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day! (However, closing times may vary individually.)
