St. Thomas Church on Mariannenplatz: A Giant from the Gründerzeit Era
The clever blend of Italian Renaissance and the classical Schinkel school makes the building a real eye-catcher. The twin towers and the 56-meter-high dome give the whole structure almost the character of a cathedral.
Around the turn of the century, Berlin was growing rapidly, and the working-class district of Kreuzberg needed space for worship. As a result, St. Thomas Church served a congregation of around 150,000 members! It was considered the largest Protestant congregation in the world.
The church was severely damaged during World War II, and it is only thanks to extensive restoration work in the postwar decades that the light-colored brick now shines once again.
Concerts and a vibrant neighborhood culture
In addition to traditional church services, there’s plenty more going on within these historic walls. The congregation is deeply rooted in the neighborhood and regularly hosts choir concerts, readings, and exhibitions.
The enormous ceiling height beneath the dome creates acoustics more commonly found in massive cathedrals. Be sure to check the calendar before your visit—there are often fantastic events here for free or for just a small fee.

The adjacent park in front of the Bethanien Art Quarter and the expansive church grounds together form a green oasis.
