The capital’s largest Catholic church building in terms of floor area is tucked away in Neukölln. Right next to Hasenheide Park and just a stone’s throw from the Südstern, the imposing St. John’s Basilica stands tall.
Built in a record time of just three years and solemnly consecrated in 1897, the building once served as a garrison church for the soldiers stationed at Tempelhof Field. Today, Berlin’s Polish community and the Catholic Military Ordinariate have their spiritual home here .
St. John’s Basilica in Berlin: From Military Base to Papal Honors
Architect August Menken didn’t do things by halves. When you step through the main portal, a three-nave cruciform structure in the Rhenish-Romanesque style opens up before you. It feels like being in an Italian cathedral. In fact , in 1906, Pope Pius X bestowed upon the building the rare honorary title of “Basilica minor”— at that time, only the third church in all of Germany to receive it!
Although it survived two world wars and had to surrender its bells at times for armaments, the basic structure remained surprisingly well-preserved.
Architecture that takesyour breath away
Admire the enormous mosaic of the Ruler of the World in the ribbed vault. When the afternoon sun streams through the stained-glass windows created by Helga Lingnau-Sacks, it illuminates the faces of Christian resistance fighters and victims of National Socialism.
The basilica honors these courageous people in an impressive, interdenominational memorial cycle. Here you’ll find a stained-glass window dedicated to the Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, alongside memorial windows for Edith Stein and Bernhard Lichtenberg.

By car, take Columbiadamm to Lilienthalstraße, where you can find a parking spot along the curb. If you’re using public transportation, take the U7 subway line to the Südstern station and walk the remaining 100 meters.
