If you’re looking for the best restaurants and bars in Berlin, you can’t go past Kreuzberg. One of the hotspots is Markthalle Neun. For a long time it was on the sidelines of Berlin Kreuzberg; today it is one of the most popular places to go for gourmets from all over the world. Find out here how the Markthalle made this leap and what makes it so unique.
Market hall of many options

The hall was opened in 1891 as one of the original 14 municipal market halls in Berlin. While many of these halls disappeared over time or were used for other purposes, Markthalle Neun narrowly escaped being converted into a conventional supermarket with an underground car park over ten years ago. A committed citizens’ initiative campaigned for a concept that focused on regional trade, craftsmanship and diversity instead of mass-produced goods.
Over the last few years, the market hall in the Kreuzberg district has developed into a real hotspot. And that makes perfect sense, as it is a gourmet temple that offers its visitors a buffet of different cuisines.
The interior of the old hall consists mainly of small restaurants and market stalls that offer their respective dishes here. They are connected by small alleyways and several seating areas where you can eat in comfort. The market hall is therefore ideal for a dinner date with several people, as you don’t have to spend an unnecessarily long time deciding on a restaurant that suits everyone’s tastes. Instead, everyone can order the food that appeals to them the most. Afterwards, you can still eat together, which makes the win-win situation perfect!
The Menu: An offer for everyone

The offer varies between so many options that they cannot even be listed here! What’s more, many of the smaller stands fluctuate regularly, which makes it difficult to describe them precisely. So it’s best to check out the various options for yourself on site. However, the basic range includes fruit and vegetables, cheese, milk and eggs, meat and fish, vegan products, baked goods, coffee and drinks and a supermarket. Just like at a real weekly market!
Speaking of weekly markets: special markets are also held regularly in the market hall to provide an additional range of products. Street Food Thursday, for example, is more than justifiably famous. This is celebrated every Thursday between 5 and 10 pm with stalls from all over the world. There is also the Breakfast Market, which takes place every third Sunday of the month. It is more than true to its name and serves up breakfasts from all over the world. So come and see for yourself, take a look and be surprised by the options!
