Movie fans in the city, take note ! Berlin already has plenty of extraordinary movie experiences to offer—from Germany’s largest cinema organ, which remains in its original form to this day, to a theater where you’re served a 16-course meal to accompany the film. The list of unique movie theaters in the capital is long, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for new highlights. While we’ve had to travel to southern Germany to see the world’s largest IMAX screen until now, we can now look forward to a new IMAX experience right here in town. CineStar Berlin-Tegel will extensively modernize its existing Theater 1 and equip it with state-of-the-art IMAX technology.

Plans include an impressive screen, high-resolution 4K laser projection, an immersive multi-channel sound system, and a total of 277 seats. This will expand the capital’s cinema offerings with yet another premium format designed to provide visitors with a particularly intense movie experience. The centerpiece of the new IMAX theater will be a gigantic screen with an area of exactly 186.85 square meters . According to CineStar, the screen is being custom-manufactured in Canada specifically for the modernized theater . Its exact width and height have not yet been disclosed.
In addition to its impressive size, the new projection technology in particular is designed to deliver an extraordinary cinematic experience. It uses high-resolution 4K IMAX laser projection, which enables exceptionally sharp images, intense colors, and strong contrasts. The laser technology also ensures uniform illumination of the large screen, making even the finest image details clearly visible.
The visual technology is complemented by an immersive multichannel sound system. This system distributes sound spatially throughout the theater and is designed to ensure that viewers can immerse themselves even more deeply in the film’s plot. Whether it’s spectacular action scenes, atmospheric film scores, or quiet dialogue—the interplay of image and sound is intended to create a particularly intense cinematic experience. However, the announcement so far does not specify which specific IMAX laser system will be installed or which aspect ratios the new auditorium will support.

No additional cinema complex is being built for the new IMAX theater. Instead, the existing Theater 1 at CineStar Berlin-Tegel will undergo extensive modernization and technical upgrades. Once the work is complete, it will seat a total of 277 guests. CineStar Berlin-Tegel is located at Borsigturm 2 in Berlin’s Reinickendorf district. The existing theater complex has nine auditoriums with a total of 2,115 seats, making it one of the larger multiplexes in the northern part of the capital. With the planned IMAX expansion, the location will gain an additional premium offering in the future.
