Berlin is one of the most creative cities in Europe, if not the world. Given the rich cultural offerings in the capital, there is no doubt about that. One of Berlin’s most unusual neighborhoods is Holzmarkt 25. Located directly on the banks of the Spree in Friedrichshain, it is a counterpoint to the sleek glass-and-concrete architecture of the surrounding area. In winter, the area is transformed into one of the city’s most unusual and cozy Christmas markets, with bonfires and artistic performances. But it is also worth a visit at any other time of year .
From Bar25 to Holzmarkt
Holzmarkt 25 hasn’t been around for very long. Its creation is a rare victory for Berlin’s club culture over the real estate industry. It used to be the site of the legendary techno club Bar25, known for its multi-day parties and playground-like atmosphere. When the site was to be cleared for the “Mediaspree” investor project, the operators fought back.
Instead of giving up, the creators founded a cooperative. In 2012, they succeeded in buying the property, thus removing it from purely commercial development. The successor club to Bar25 is Kater Blau. Today, it is an integral part of the site and offers everything a Berlin partygoer could desire.
An “urban village” in Berlin

Today’s Holzmarkt 25 does not see itself as a commercial shopping center, but as a cooperatively managed neighborhood. Covering around 12,000 m², it combines culture, crafts, gastronomy, and nature. There is something for everyone: there is a recording studio, a daycare center, a music school, a coworking space, a bakery, a restaurant , and even a wine shop.
This is where Berlin’s openness comes to life. The site is open to everyone all week long, and there is no pressure to consume. Something is always open. Or, in the words of the operators themselves: “Someone is always there to take care of you.” At the same time , this special place thrives on its versatility. There is always something going on at Holzmarkt , and construction and renovation work is constantly underway—often with recycled materials. Because sustainability is also a top priority here.
