The Labyrinth in Wesendahl is actually a maze: What’s the difference?
Colloquially, the terms are often used interchangeably, but in reality they refer to two completely different concepts:
- A labyrinth consists of a single, winding path with no branches. Whoever follows it inevitably reaches the center and exits via the same path.
- A maze, like the one in Wesendahl, is a network of paths with real intersections and intentional dead ends. Getting lost, turning back, and actively searching for the right path to the center are the actual goals.

From the Wesendahl Mill to the Fängersee
A visit to the maze can be perfectly combined with exploring the immediate neighborhood, which is characterized by forests, water, and a touch of decay.
- The Wesendahl Mill: The history of this watermill on the Fredersdorfer Mühlenfließ dates back to the 16th century. For many decades, the site was a thriving and extremely popular restaurant for day-trippers. Since its permanent closure in 2007, the site has stood empty and is increasingly becoming a“lost place.”
- Fängersee: The shore of Fängersee begins directly south of the mill. This elongated, 45-hectare channel lake—which is up to 8 meters deep—is densely surrounded by pine forests. In the southern section, the water is lined with extensive fields of water lilies. The lake is popular with both anglers (pike, tench, perch) and hikers.
- Hiking and Nature: The well-known 66-Lakes Hiking Trail runs along the eastern shore of Fängersee. On the way from the village of Wesendahl down to the mill, the white Camargue horses from the local horse farm are often grazing in the paddocks.
Directions and Practical Information
The maze is an excellent choice as the starting or ending point of a walk around the lake.
- By car: Take the B1/B5 eastbound. From the Berlin city limits, you’ll reach Wesendahl in about 30 minutes.
- Public transportation: Take the S-Bahn line S5 to Strausberg; from there, bus 926 takes visitors directly to Wesendahl.
