Want to get active in nature? Then the possibilities in and around Berlin are virtually limitless—from a forest high-rope course to a water playground in the Spreewald for the whole family. However, if you’re looking for a particularly beautiful hike, you should visit the Grunewald . That’s where the Havelhöhenweg runs—one of Berlin’s most beautiful hiking trails, often described as one of the capital’s most scenically diverse walking and hiking paths .

The Havelhöhenweg stretches for about 10 kilometers along the steep banks of the Havel River through the Grunewald— from Heerstraße or the Stößensee Bridge to the Wannsee Beach. Despite its location right in the heart of Berlin, in many places the trail feels more like a hike in Brandenburg or in the low mountain ranges.
The trail begins in the north at the Stößensee Bridge near Heerstraße and runs along the eastern bank of the Havel to the Wannsee Beach in the south. It winds through the Grunewald Forest and connects some of Berlin’s most beautiful viewpoints and natural areas. Depending on your pace, you should plan on spending about 4 to 5 hours for the entire route. The trail is considered easy to moderately difficult and is also suitable for recreational hikers.
Unlike many hiking trails in Berlin, the Havelhöhenweg does not run directly along the water but mostly above the banks of the Havel on the wooded heights of the Grunewald. This offers spectacular views of the Havel, the Wannsee, and the surrounding forests time and again. Here and there, stairs and narrow paths lead down to the shore and then back up to the hills. In several places, the elevation difference is as much as 35 meters, which is unusual by Berlin standards.

Along the way, you’ll pass numerous well-known sights and lookout points. These include the Grunewald Tower with its panoramic view of the Havel, the historic Schildhorn Peninsula, the tranquil Lieper Bucht, several viewing platforms such as the “Großes Fenster,” and numerous forest trails right along the steep banks. At the end of the hike, you’ll reach the famous Wannsee Beach, which is perfect for a break or a dip in the water during the summer.
The Havelhöhenweg winds through one of Berlin’s largest contiguous forest areas. Old pines, beeches, and oaks line the trail, while views of the Havel River open up time and again between the trees. Especially in spring and fall, the route offers one of the capital’s most beautiful nature experiences. Numerous bird species and other wildlife also call the Grunewald home.
