Berlin continues to grow, and we love all the new openings and exciting additions that come with it. From a new Wild West-style Edeka E-Center to the comeback of one of Berlin’s most famous delicatessens: there’s a lot going on in the capital right now. And it’s far from over. The next major project is taking shape at Weinstraße 9 in Berlin-Friedrichshain. Where a single-story Aldi store with an attached parking lot once stood, a new residential and commercial building is currently under construction. A total of 69 rental apartments with approximately 4,698 square meters of living space are set to be built here. And Aldi is also returning to its old location.

The site was previously home to a single-story Aldi supermarket with an attached parking lot. This has since been demolished to make way for a multi-story residential and commercial building. The property covers a total of approximately 3,200 square meters. The new building will feature 69 rental apartments with a total living space of approximately 4,698 square meters. Notably, 66 of the 69 apartments will be publicly subsidized. A new Aldi Nord supermarket with approximately 1,400 square meters of floor space is planned for the ground floor of the building. The supermarket will therefore not be located next to the apartments but will be directly integrated into the new building complex.
The planned layout of the 69 apartments has also already been finalized. The plan calls for 36 two-room apartments, 23 three-room apartments, and ten four-room apartments. Since 66 of these are to be publicly subsidized, nearly the entire residential portion of the project consists of subsidized housing. The construction project thus combines the return of the Aldi store with the creation of new housing in Friedrichshain.
The project has now reached an important construction milestone. The foundation slab has been fully poured, so that the rest of the structural work can now proceed. According to the contractor, approximately 800 cubic meters of concrete were required for the foundation slab. About 100 concrete mixers from five different batching plants were used for this purpose. The groundbreaking ceremony had already taken place in July. Among other things, a time capsule was buried in the foundation during the ceremony. Among those attending the ceremony were Berlin’s Senator for Urban Development Christian Gaebler, STADT-UND-LAND Managing Director Natascha Klimek, and a representative from Aldi Nord.

Completion of the entire residential and commercial building is scheduled for the first quarter of 2028 . There is no specific opening date for the new Aldi store yet. Accordingly, I would say that the project is scheduled for completion in early 2028, rather than specifying a particular opening date for the supermarket just yet.
The building is being constructed by Kondor Wessels Bouw Berlin. Upon completion, the project is to be taken over by the state-owned housing association STADT UND LAND. Aldi Nord, in turn, will use the retail space on the ground floor. The project also represents a trend that Aldi Nord has been pursuing in Berlin for several years now. Properties that previously housed mostly single-story supermarkets and parking lots are to be put to better use by combining retail and residential construction. According to Aldi Nord , around 500 apartments have already been built or are under construction in Berlin over the past ten years using this approach. Another 350 or so apartments could be added in the coming years.
