Construction sites in Berlin: a topic that never ends. But if our capital is to remain one of the best cities in Europe, something has to be done about it. In the new year, a lot will therefore be done to make Berlin greener and more liveable. These urban transformations await us in 2026 and will change the appearance of some important sights. We explain the biggest construction projects at a glance.
More space for pedestrians in Berlin

The world-famous boulevard “Unter den Linden ” in the center of Berlin is being redesigned. The big goal is to make Berlin’s city center more bicycle and pedestrian-friendly without losing its historical character. This huge construction project is due to start in summer 2026 and will take several years to complete.
Torstraße (Mitte) is also set for some urban redevelopment. Similar to the boulevard “Unter den Linden”, wider sidewalks, safe cycle lanes and more green spaces are to be created here. The whole project is due to start in summer 2026 at the earliest and is scheduled to take 2.5 years.
In addition to these two major projects, other renovations are also underway in Berlin. Many central squares are being redesigned, including Europaplatz (in front of the main railway station), Breitenbachplatz, Hermann-Ehlers-Platz and Alice-Salomon-Platz.
New bridges and more apartments

A number of bridges are also due to be redesigned. These include the Elsenbrücke (Treptow-Köpenick), which is being completely rebuilt. The construction site in the Spree area will therefore remain a bottleneck for traffic. The Mühlendamm bridge (Mitte) also remains a construction site.
Living space in Berlin is in short supply and this is unlikely to change any time soon. But the city wants to do something about it in 2026: A number of new residential quarters are being built in Berlin. These include the large “Am Sandhaus” district in Pankow with around 2,700 apartments.
The Bockbrauerei in Kreuzberg with 220 new apartments and commercial space is due to be completed by the end of 2026. And the former Tetra Pak factory in Reinickendorf is also opening for construction. Around 700 new apartments will soon be built here.
