Between Legends and Fairy Tales: A Trip to Bohemian Switzerland
The highlight of the trip is undoubtedly the Prebischtor (Pravčická brána). With a span of 26.5 meters, it is the largest natural sandstone bridge in Europe (see cover photo). The trail there takes you along beautiful (but challenging!) hiking trails through dense forests and past stunning rock formations. Be sure to pack sturdy hiking boots!
Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view and can admire the Hotel Falkennest (see image above) and grab a bite to eat there.
Did you know that parts of the movie “The Chronicles of Narnia” were filmed in Bohemian Switzerland? When you wander through the area, it’s no wonder— the landscape really does look like something out of a fantasy film.
Pure romance in wild gorges: Wilde Klamm or Edmundsklamm?
In addition to the dizzying heights, the deep gorges of the Kamenice (Kamnitz) offer a wonderful change of pace. The choice is yours: The majestic Edmund Gorge entices with spectacular rock faces and picture-perfect scenery. Those seeking an untamed natural experience, on the other hand, will find a great alternative in the unspoiled Wild Gorge.
On a ride in a flatboat through the river landscape of “ ,” you’ll glide silently through the water alongside moss-covered rock faces.
Here’s how to get to Bohemian Switzerland
🚗 By car, it takes just under three hours from Berlin via the A13 and A17 through Dresden to the border town of Hřensko. The route is exceptionally well-maintained and leads you almost directly into this hiker’s paradise.
🚆 By public transit, take the EuroCity from Berlin Central Station—no transfers required— to the Czech city of Děčín in just over 2 hours. From there, take the local bus, which will take you to the starting point of your hikes in about 20 minutes.
