The club originally started out in the vaults of an old department store – hence its name “Tresor” – before moving to a disused thermal power station in Köpenicker Straße (Berlin-Mitte) in 2007. Authentic, raw techno in an industrial atmosphere still characterizes the place today and makes it one of the top spots for electronic music worldwide. Well-known DJs and producers such as Surgeon, Kenny Larkin, Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills regularly take to the DJ booth here. But Tresor is more than just a club – with its own label Tresor Records, it has also established itself as a major player in music production and continues to release tracks by international artists to this day.
Founder Dimitri Hegemann has a lot to be proud of with the opening of this club. Even before Tresor, Hegemann had already established himself in the Berlin club scene with the Ufo-Club (1988 in Köpenicker Straße 6) – the city’s first acid house club. His name has long been a fixture on the techno scene. After the closure of the Ufo-Club, Hegemann founded the legendary Tresor together with Achim Kohlberger in 1991 – laying the foundations for a cultural movement. Dimitri Hegemann was recently officially honored for his achievements: on 1 October 2025, he received the Berlin Order of Merit. This award is the highest state honor bestowed by the state of Berlin. It recognizes people who have made outstanding contributions to the cultural, social or economic life of the city.
With Tresor, Hegemann has made Berlin’s culture known worldwide and established the capital as an international center of electronic music. The award honors his lasting influence on the city and its culture. His life’s work impressively demonstrates the extent to which club culture and techno are now part of state and cultural recognition – a milestone not only for Hegemann, but for the entire scene.
