Fleetwood Mac is one of the most successful rock bands of all time and continues to thrill millions of fans to this day with classics like “Dreams,” “The Chain,” and “Go Your Own Way.” But what many people don’t know is that as early as 1970, the British group performed at Berlin’s legendary Sportpalast—back then with a completely different lineup.
More than five decades later, you can rediscover their greatest hits at a classic tribute concert in Berlin. But that performance marked a special phase in the band’s history, because just a few weeks later, everything was about to change for the musicians.

Fleetwood Mac in Berlin: A Concert Just Before the Big Change
On March 19, 1970, Fleetwood Mac took the stage at the Sportpalast in West Berlin. At the time, the band was best known for its blues rock, and guitarist and co-founder Peter Green shaped their unmistakable sound.
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who later played a key role in the band’s global success, were not yet part of the lineup at that time.
Just a few days after the Berlin concert, a fateful incident occurred in Munich during the same German tour. Green visited a hippie commune there, where he reportedly took LSD. That visit is considered a significant event leading up to his departure from the band, even though the exact circumstances are still debated today.
In May 1970, Green finally left Fleetwood Mac. The band subsequently went through several lineup changes before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined in 1975.
Two years later, “Rumours” was released—one of the most successful albums in rock history. The Berlin concert was thus one of the last performances of the original blues-rock era with Peter Green.
