The best of Berlin’s summer is yet to come. From a new exclusive sandy beach area to a free swimming pool right in front of the city’s most famous theater—Berlin is surprising visitors this season with numerous new openings. And fans of rooftop venues are in for a treat: On the roof of the KALLE in Berlin-Neukölln , “The Dawn” is emerging as one of the capital’s most exciting new rooftop concepts . The restaurant is one of the year’s biggest new dining openingsand is part of the comprehensive revitalization of the former Karstadt department store at Karl-Marx-Straße 101.
The Dawn will be the brand’s second Berlin location, following the restaurant at Bikini Berlin. It is operated by restaurateur Omar Alayoub. The restaurant is being built on the building’s roof and, spanning nearly 800 square meters, offers space for more than 200 guests. Of these, 125 seats are located indoors and over 100 on the spacious rooftop terrace, which offers a sweeping view of Neukölln and the Berlin skyline.
Culinary-wise, The Dawn focuses on an international selection of breakfast, brunch, and lunch dishes. At the same time, the rooftop is intended to be much more than just a restaurant. Regular cultural events are planned, such as stand-up comedy, small concerts, and other live events that will bring the venue to life throughout the day.
Right next to the restaurant, an extraordinary wellness area with a rooftop pool and sauna is being built. The 17-meter-long and 4-meter-wide pool is heated by district heating, making it usable year-round. The area is complemented by a rooftop sauna, which expands the rooftop concept to include a wellness area. At the time of the announcement, an operator was still being sought for another separate rooftop restaurant in the immediate vicinity of the pool.
Another central feature of KALLE is the Paradox Music Hall. The approximately 1,100-square-meter concert hall is operated as a branch of Berlin’s cultural venue Prachtwerk and can accommodate around 600 standing guests or just under 300 seated guests. In addition, the hall can be expanded to include a winter garden. About 100 concerts are planned per year, while the space will be used for corporate events during the week.
With The Dawn, a rooftop pool, sauna, music hall, food hall, offices, and event spaces, KALLE aims to create a vibrant space that’s used from morning until night . According to project developer Hans Stier, the goal is to create a neighborhood that combines work, dining, culture, celebration, and relaxation —all under one roof.
