Do you feel the need to recharge your batteries in nature again? No problem—just a stone’s throw from Berlin, numerous impressive destinations await. From sprawling castle parks with a Mediterranean atmosphere to island towns that completely transport you away from the hustle and bustle and are almost entirely surrounded by water. Brandenburg is so rich in natural sites that you’re often spoiled for choice rather than wondering if there’s anything to discover at all. And we’re not making it any easier for you today—on the contrary: we have a new hidden gem for you. The Tegeler Fließ is one of the most impressive natural areas in northern Berlin and Brandenburg and surprises with a landscape that, in places, almost exudes an alpine vastness .

Instead of dense forests, open meadows, wetlands, and waterways dominate here, lending the area a special sense of tranquility and expansiveness. The Tegeler Fließ stretches between Berlin’s Reinickendorf district and the surrounding Brandenburg countryside, extending into the Barnim Nature Park. It is a lowland moor—a wetland crisscrossed by a small stream that winds its way for several kilometers. The result is an unusual blend of northern German moorland and almost mountainous expansiveness.
A special feature of the Tegeler Fließ are the water buffalo, which are specifically used here for landscape management. Through their grazing, they keep the areas open, prevent the moorland from becoming overgrown, and simultaneously promote biodiversity in the area. This creates precisely the kind of pristine, slightly wild landscape that makes the Tegeler Fließ so special.

Another highlight are the wooden boardwalks that wind through the wetland. They lead directly through the moorland, allowing access without disturbing the sensitive ecosystem, and constantly open up new vistas across the water and meadows. These boardwalks are particularly appealing for photography, as they introduce clean lines into the landscape and create perspectives that are otherwise hard to find.
The Tegeler Fließ derives its appeal less from individual sights than from its overall effect. Vast, almost endless meadows, tranquil bodies of water with reflections, and the rare blend of silence, wildness, and openness define the atmosphere. Especially in the early morning hours or in the evening, an almost meditative mood emerges, setting the place apart from typical Berlin parks.
