We have plenty of magnificent castles around Berlin; from Renaissance architecture to Late Classicism, imposing structures characterize not only the capital’s surroundings but all of Germany. And while, according to Guinness World Records, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria is the tallest castle in the world, it now has competition. We’re talking about Stobnica Castle, standing over 70 meters tall in western Poland’s Greater Poland Voivodeship, near the town of Oborniki. The gigantic castle rises in the middle of a forest and lake landscape on the edge of the Noteć Forest and looks like a mix of a fantasy film, a medieval fortress, and a modern luxury project.

Construction began in 2015. With a height of over 70 meters, around 15 stories, and an area of more than 10,000 square meters , the castle is considered one of the tallest newly built “castles” in Europe. The architecture is deliberately inspired by medieval castles and European fortresses. With its massive towers, stone walls, and monumental appearance , the building is strongly reminiscent of Gothic castles or fantasy worlds like those in Game of Thrones. Particularly striking are the huge main tower and the artificial island on which the castle is located. This makes the complex seem almost surreal, as it suddenly appears in the middle of an otherwise natural forest landscape.
The project gained international attention primarily because of its secrets and controversies. For a long time, it was unclear exactly who was behind the castle, why such a gigantic castle was being built , and how the permits for it were obtained. Many people initially even thought the project was a hoax or a computer-generated vision.
Environmental organizations, in particular, heavily criticized the construction. The castle was built in a sensitive natural region near protected forest areas and important ecosystems . Critics accused those responsible of circumventing nature conservation rules and drastically altering the landscape. As a result , investigations, legal disputes, and political debatessurrounding the building permits continued for years. Consequently, the project became almost more famous for its controversies than for its architecture.

The castle’s purpose also remained a mystery for a long time. At times, rumors circulated about a luxury hotel, a private residence, or an investment project. Today, it is assumed that exclusive apartments have been or are being built there. The enormous fascination surrounding the castle stems primarily from the blend of monumental architecture, medieval aesthetics, an air of mystery, and luxurious seclusion in the middle of the forest. Especially when viewed from the air, the complex appears almost unreal—like a modern fantasy version of a European royal castle.
