The Ruinenberg in Potsdam: Ancient Illusions from a Shattered Dream
Frederick the Great had actually intended to feed the magnificent fountains of his palace from here starting in 1748. Since the water technology of the time wasn’t yet up to the task, the gigantic basin remained dry. To creatively conceal this technical failure, he had ancient-style backdrops erected without further ado.
On the hill, you’ll discover a Doric circular temple, the imposing wall of a Roman theater, Roman columns, and a medieval tower. The composition is arranged around a circular water basin. It’s a blend of romantic idealism and creative landscaping.
A climb that’s well worth it
In the mid-19th century, the area gained another genuine attraction. The 23-meter-high Norman Tower on the Ruinenberg looks like a medieval watchtower, but dates back to the time of Frederick William IV.
As you climb the steps to the crenellated platform, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Brandenburg. On select special opening days, you can let your gaze wander from up here across the entire palace grounds all the way to Peacock Island.
Pure relaxation away from the hustle and bustle
While crowds of visitors often throng below at the palace, up here on the hill you’ll find wonderful tranquility. Pack your camera, because the scene —with its blend of water, trees, and ruins —offers fantastic shots that look like a romantic painting.
🚗 The best way to reach the site by car is via the B273 and Pappelallee, where you’ll also find several parking options.
🚇 By public transit, simply take bus 695 from Potsdam Central Station to the “Schloss Sanssouci” stop and walk the short distance up the hill.
