The Orangery Palace in Sanssouci Park: A Dream of Italy
King Frederick William IV was a huge fan of Italy—and you can see that in every column. The complex is modeled after the famous Villa Medici in Rome and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Stroll up the grand staircases, discover sculptures, and enjoy the view over the historic gardens.
Regular public access to the interior is currently on hold while the building undergoes extensive renovation. However, this only makes the place even more exciting, as the doors open from time to time for exclusive events. During these special openings, you can take a look behind the scenes.
A highlight of the Orangery: The legendary Raphael Room
Over 50 copies of the most famous paintings by the Renaissance artist Raphael hang here in a red-draped hall beneath a massive skylight. This room was designed by the king specifically for this art collection, and (when open) its regal opulence takes your breath away.
Spending the Winter Like Kings
The two plant halls, each over 100 meters long, still serve their original purpose. As soon as the days grow shorter in the fall, around 1,000 subtropical potted plants from throughout the palace grounds find their winter home here. Until then, the palm trees and orange trees stand outside, lending the palace grounds their Mediterranean flair.
🚗 By car, take the A115 to the Potsdam-Babelsberg exit, follow Nuthestraße, and turn onto the B1 toward Sanssouci. There’s a paid parking lot at the Historic Mill of Sanssouci.
🚇 By public transit, take the RE1 (or the S7) to Potsdam Hbf and then take bus 695 to the “Orangerieschloss/Botanischer Garten” stop.
