When the sun shines, there’s one thing that’s important in Berlin: getting out into the fresh air. There are enough rainy days in the city. Instead, we want to enjoy the sunshine in the most beautiful parks, especially now. If we want to go a little further afield, there are plenty of options. Schloss Krumke near Osterburg is located a little deeper in the Altmark region. The castle grounds are well worth seeing! In addition to the more famous palaces in Brandenburg, you will find an excursion destination here that looks like a forgotten fairytale castle.
A garden for a castle
The neo-Gothic Krumke Castle dates back to the 19th century. With its red bricks, battlements, towers, and small moat , it perfectly embodies the romantic spirit of the time—some even refer to it as a real “Disney castle.” But the real heart of the complex is Krumke Castle Park. It belongs to the “Garden Dreams – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt” network and is one of the most important gardens in the region.
It is home to one of the oldest boxwood hedges in Europe. The boxwood wall in Krumke is actually almost 400 years old. It is about 6 meters high and over 80 meters long. At a time when the box tree moth – a pest – has destroyed many historic box trees in Europe, it is almost a miracle that this huge green monument in the Altmark region has survived so magnificently. The park invites visitors to take long, dreamy walks.
Castle idyll with a touch of equestrian sport

Krumke Castle differs from other castles in the region primarily in its close connection to horse breeding. The village of Krumke is known far beyond the country’s borders as a “horse village.” The Krumke Riding and Driving Club is located right next to the castle . If you find yourself there, with a little luck you can take a stately carriage ride through the park or watch dressage riders at work . The entire surrounding area is ideal for horseback riding. Alternatively, you can also explore by bicycle .
In the castle park, you will find the permanent exhibition “Liebe zum Buchsbaum”(Love of Boxwood), which also tells the history of the castle. Even though the castle itself is not open to visitors, you can read in the “park library” in the stone cabinet and try homemade cakes in the café in the Kavaliershaus right at the park entrance. Krumke is the ideal place for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of Berlin and is looking for a castle that combines historical elegance with rural idyll and a touch of equestrian sport.
