Movies don’t have to be just for winter, when it’s cold outside. At the same time, summer doesn’t mean you have to skip a movie night or sit in a dark theater to enjoy one. Open-air movie theaters are the perfect solution — and Berlin has plenty of them. Today we’d like to introduce you to one of the capital’s most hidden and alternative spots: Die Neue Zukunft is one of Berlin’s most charming cultural venues and a real hidden gem for anyone who wants to enjoy movies, concerts, and relaxed summer evenings away from the big tourist crowds. Here, film, water, nature, and alternative culture come together to create an atmosphere you rarely find in Berlin.
The cultural complex is located directly on Rummelsburger Bucht at Alt-Stralau 68 in Berlin-Friedrichshain and combines an open-air cinema, an arthouse cinema, a beer garden, concerts, and events all in one place. The Neue Zukunft open-air cinema is particularly popular and is open every year from late April through early October. During the 2026 season, the open-air cinema will run from April 30 to October 2. On balmy summer evenings, a film is shown daily under the open sky—ranging from international arthouse films and classics to current productions and film concerts. Screenings usually begin at dusk, typically around 9 p.m.
The cinema has about 300 seats and is one of Berlin’s most atmospheric open-air cinemas. Visitors sit among trees and string lights in a cozy courtyard right on the water. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, screenings at the open-air cinema are canceled. As an alternative, however, there’s the adjacent Kino Zukunft, which operates year-round as an arthouse cinema.
Admission to the arthouse cinema costs 8 euros, or 6 euros with a discount. For the open-air cinema , tickets during the 2026 season are 9 euros for general admission and 7 euros with a discount. The current film schedule is updated regularly online.
However, the Neue Zukunft is far more than just a movie theater. The grounds also feature a large beer garden, several event spaces, and regularly host concerts, readings, DJ nights, and cultural events. This creates a relaxed backyard atmosphere that many Berliners particularly appreciate. Precisely because places with this alternative and creative character are becoming increasingly rare in Berlin, the Neue Zukunft is considered by many to be a true gem of the city.
