Spending the summer by the water is probably one of the best ideas you can have. Fortunately, there are numerous lakes around central Berlin where you can treat yourself to a spontaneous dip to cool off. From the Plötzensee beach to Müggelsee, the selection is vast. But not everyone knows what awaits you at Müggelsee: a fishing village with centuries-old tradition. The Müggelsee Thamm Fishery is located at Dorfstraße 13 in Berlin-Rahnsdorf, right on the water in the heart of the historic fishing village.
The Müggelsee-Fischerei Thamm isn’t just a tourist fish stand—it’s an active, family-run fishing business. Here, fish from the Müggelsee and the surrounding Berlin waters are caught, processed, and sold. Its location also makes the place special. The farm is situated on the Müggelspree, not far from Lake Müggelsee, and is characterized by water, fishing boats, and the business’s facilities. This creates an atmosphere that’s more reminiscent of a small fishing village than the big city of Berlin.
What makes the place particularly extraordinary is its long history. The old fishing estate dates back to 1535 and thus looks back on a history spanning nearly 500 years. The Thamm family initially managed the historic estate and eventually purchased and renovated it in 2001. Andreas Thamm himself also has decades of experience. He has been working as a fisherman since he was 15. His work takes him regularly out onto Lake Müggelsee, where he checks the fish traps and nets. The catch is then processed and sold directly.
Maria Thamm now also plays an important role in the family business. She is a trained fisherwoman and works alongside her father. In 2025, the Tagesspiegel even referred to her as Berlin’s only female fisherwoman. Eventually, Andreas Thamm plans to pass the family business on to his daughter. The workday can start as early as 5 a.m. Depending on the season, the weather, and the fish’s behavior, nets and traps are set in different locations and at various depths. This carries on a traditional craft that has become a true rarity in a big city like Berlin.
On weekends, the Müggelsee-Fischerei Thamm also transforms into a small day-trip destination. Among other things, they offer freshly smoked fish and fish sandwiches, though the specific selection may vary. The location right on the water is particularly lovely. Amid the fishing boats and the business’s facilities, you can grab a fish sandwich and then enjoy the view of the Müggelspree. Even though you’re still within Berlin, this makes the visit feel a bit like a trip to a small fishing village.
There are conflicting reports regarding the opening hours. A current notice lists May 1 through October 3, as well as Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Berlin Fisheries Office, however , lists the Müggelsee-Fischerei’s hours as May through September, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you want to be on the safe side, you should therefore check the current opening hours again before your visit.
