Are you a big fan of architecture and passionate about castles, palaces, and other fascinating structures near Berlin? Then you’ve come to the right place, because we’re always on the lookout for the most impressive spots around the capital to share with you. Just recently, we told you about the world’s tallest newly built castle, located in Germany and easily accessible from Berlin. But you shouldn’t miss Lenzen Castle either: situated in the heart of the UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve, this historic complex combines the atmosphere of a medieval castle with one of northern Germany’s most impressive natural landscapes.

The location alone makes the place extraordinary. Lenzen Castle is situated right in the Prignitz region near the Elbe and is surrounded by vast floodplains, green meadows, small waterways, and pristine river landscapes. This creates an atmosphere completely different from that of classic castles or palaces in Brandenburg. Instead of tourist bustle, tranquility, nature, and an almost unhurried mood prevail there.
Historically, the castle’s history dates back deep into the Middle Ages. For centuries, it played an important role as a border and trading post along the Elbe. Even today, massive walls, historic building sections, and the elevated location shape the complex’s appearance and lend it an impressive medieval atmosphere.
What’s particularly exciting, however, is the blend of nature and architecture. Today, the castle houses the visitor center for the UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve. This makes Lenzen Castle not only a historic destination but also a starting point for nature experiences, hikes, and bike rides along the Elbe.

The Elbe floodplains around Lenzen are among the most ecologically valuable river landscapes in Germany. Numerous rare animal species live there, such as white storks, white-tailed eagles, beavers, cranes, and otters. Especially in spring and summer, the landscape looks almost like a vast natural backdrop of water, meadows, and ancient trees.
The region is also particularly popular for bike tours along the Elbe Cycle Route. Many visitors therefore combine a visit to the castle with walks or longer tours through the floodplain landscape. This offers time and again impressive views of dikes, small river branches, and the nearly untouched nature of the Elbe.
