But you shouldn’t miss Lenzen Castle either: situated in the heart of the UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve, this historic complex combines the atmosphere of a medieval castle with one of northern Germany’s most impressive natural landscapes.
The location alone makes the place extraordinary. Lenzen Castle is situated right in the Prignitz region near the Elbe and is surrounded by vast floodplains, green meadows, small waterways, and pristine river landscapes. This creates an atmosphere completely different from that of classic castles or palaces in Brandenburg. Instead of tourist bustle, tranquility, nature, and an almost unhurried mood prevail there.
Historically, the castle’s history dates back deep into the Middle Ages. For centuries, it played an important role as a border and trading post along the Elbe. Even today, massive walls, historic building sections, and the elevated location shape the complex’s appearance and lend it an impressive medieval atmosphere.

The region is also particularly popular for bike tours along the Elbe Cycle Route. Many visitors therefore combine a visit to the castle with walks or longer tours through the floodplain landscape.
