With spring finally here and the days getting longer, Berlin is once again becoming one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And one of the best things to do this season is a trip to the countryside! If you’ve already seen all the castles in Brandenburg and the surrounding area, a little further afield you’ll find one of the most important rural Baroque monuments in northern Germany. Hundisburg Castle is located in Saxony-Anhalt, but can be reached by train in around two hours. To get there, travel to Magdeburg and take the bus directly to the castle. It combines an eventful aristocratic history with impressive architecture and an almost tragic history of destruction.
From baroque castle to ruin

Hundisburg Castle, as we see it today, was mainly built between 1693 and 1712. The builder, Johann Friedrich von Alvensleben, had the old medieval castle converted into a representative Baroque palace . After its expropriation in 1945, the castle was initially used as an estate until shortly after the end of the war, when a devastating fire reduced large parts of the complex to ruins.
Originally, the castle even housed one of the most valuable private libraries in Europe . Around 10,000 volumes were stored here. However, the treasures were largely lost due to fire and looting.
For decades, the castle remained a burnt-out ruin. It was only after reunification, starting in 1991, that the town of Haldensleben began reconstruction. And the results are impressive: it is one of the most successful restoration projects in the region. Stone by stone, an impressive Baroque castle was built here, which is now a cultural site.
Today: Cultural dreams and short breaks

Today, Hundisburg Castle shines far beyond the borders of Saxony-Anhalt. The heart of the complex is the restored castle ensemble, whose magnificent academy hall regularly hosts high-caliber concerts and the renowned Summer Music Academy. Take a look at the calendar of events and plan your visit.
Adjacent to the castle is the extensive Baroque garden with its terraces, which blends seamlessly into one of Germany’s most important landscape parks and offers space for long walks. Art and history lovers will also find something to enjoy here: the Alvensleben Library and Heinrich Apel’s sculpture collection offer pure culture.
No matter when you plan a trip to Hundisburg Castle, throughout the year the grounds are transformed into a stage for major events such as the Garden Dreams in spring, atmospheric Irish evenings, or the traditional Castle Advent. If you want to stay longer, you can also spend the night in various houses there .
