The Gothic Library in Potsdam’s Neuer Garten is a hidden gem for your next weekend stroll. Completed in 1794, this architectural masterpiece served King Frederick William II as a private reading pavilion and an intimate retreat.
Even though the old books were destroyed in the turmoil of World War II and the building itself can no longer be toured from the inside, this small fairy-tale castle remains a wonderful destination for a day trip and offers one of the most beautiful views of the Havelland region.
The Gothic Library: A Structure That Almost Disappeared Into the Lake
It’s almost a miracle that this idyllic pavilion still stands on the shore today. After bombs struck the surrounding area during World War II, the foundation slid dangerously toward Heiliger See.
The structure subsequently stood at a dangerous angle for decades. It wasn’t until between 1995 and 1997 that the historic library was dismantled stone by stone in a rescue operation, its foundation secured, and finally rebuilt true to the original.
A regal statement spanning two stories
Architect Carl Gotthard Langhans, who also designed Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, planned the building as a delicate, two-story chapel. The ground floor housed the noble French classics, while the magnificent upper floor was dedicated to German literature—which was often derided at court at the time: a statement by the king in support of domestic literature.

Your Perfect Photo Spot During a Walk in the Park
Since you unfortunately can’t go inside the pavilion, a visit is especially worthwhile as the highlight of a leisurely stroll through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the New Garden.
If you look along the shoreline, you’ll be treated to a fantastic view of the Marble Palace. Pack a good book, find a bench by the water, and enjoy the wonderfully peaceful atmosphere on the lake’s shore.
If you’re driving, you can park in the side streets around Behlertstraße or on Mühlenweg, while public transportation from Potsdam Central Station takes you on tram 93 to the Holzmarktstraße stop, which is within walking distance.
