The Marble Palace in Potsdam: Red Stone and Prussian Understatement
Located directly on the shore of the Heiliger See, art-loving King Frederick William II had this ingenious summer residence built between 1787 and 1793. Instead of ornate Baroque, the design of this building relied on the calm, clean lines of Early Classicism.
The highlight is the eponymous facade made of red Silesian marble, which glows in shades of red and gray depending on the sun’s position. Inside, in addition to stunning works of art, you’ll find ornate furniture and stucco ceilings that transport you back to the late 18th century.

The palace itself is only half the fun of a successful day trip. Be sure to take full advantage of the waterfront panorama. The lakeside terrace offers a great view of Heiligen See and even provides a direct view of the palace on Pfaueninsel.

How to get to the Marmorpalais in Potsdam
🚗 By car, you’ll reach your destination in just under three-quarters of an hour via the A115, and you’ll usually find plenty of parking spots in the streets around the Neuer Garten.
🚇 By public transit, take the S7 to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof and from there take a bus or tram to the Reiterweg/Alleestraße stop.
