Berlin is breaking new ground in promoting independent open-air culture. The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district is the first in the capital to approve an official venue for free, non-commercial outdoor events. The goal is to make it easier and legal to hold cultural events such as DJ sets, small concerts, or music events outdoors.
The new venue is located at Park am Gleisdreieck, near the park management building. The site was deliberately chosen because it already has important infrastructure in place. This includes emergency escape routes, a first-aid station with a defibrillator, public restrooms, drinking fountains, a kiosk, and excellent public transportation access.
What makes the new concept in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg unique is that events will no longer have to be planned months in advance. Organizers can register their events between 24 and 72 hours before they begin . Once officially approved, the events may take place legally. Music events are permitted daily—including Sundays—until 10 p.m.
However, a prerequisite is that the events must be non-commercial. This means that no profit may be made. In addition, all regulations regarding noise control, nature conservation, and protection of local residents must be observed. The concept is based on similar models that have already been successfully implemented in cities such as Halle and Bremen.
The project was supported, among others , by the Clubcommission Berlin, which has been advocating for years for more legal spaces for Berlin’s club and cultural scene. The goal is to enable spontaneous cultural events without them coming into conflict with authorities or local residents.
For Berliners, this means more free open-air events in the future —ranging from small DJ sets and live music to cultural community events. At the same time, clear rules are in place to ensure that the events are organized safely and with consideration for the surrounding area.
