A visit to Germany’s top-rated zoo or a day at the beach with a 50-meter-long water slide —there’s plenty for families to experience all around Berlin. But what if you’d rather stay in the city with the kids and still enjoy a fun-filled afternoon ? In addition to many well-known family destinations, few people know about the hidden family area at the Humboldt Forum. On the first floor are the Academy’s workshops, which can be used free of charge and without restriction outside of scheduled workshops.
The family-friendly area is designed especially for babies, toddlers, and young families. Here, children can paint, browse through picture books and children’s books, or play with building blocks. For the youngest visitors, there’s also a cozy crawling corner, while parents can use this quiet retreat to read aloud or relax. Thanks to a changing station, visiting with even the youngest children is particularly hassle-free.
In addition to the painting area and the play corner, the workshop spaces offer even more opportunities for exploration. In the back area, you’ll find children’s games and board games, as well as a small library with children’s books, comics, picture books, and non-fiction books in various languages. For older children and adults, there are also workstations with Wi-Fi and electrical outlets.
The family area can be used free of charge as long as no workshops or events are taking place there. The workshops are open Wednesday through Monday; the Humboldt Forum is closed on Tuesdays . Thanks to an elevator, the area is also accessible to people with disabilities.
You’ll find the workshops on the first floor of the Humboldt Forum at Schloßplatz 10178 Berlin. Outside of workshop hours, families can use the area freely. The hidden family area is particularly well-suited for families with babies and toddlers, for rainy days or hot summer days, as well as for anyone who’d like to take a quiet break during a museum visit. It’s also ideal for creative painting, reading, and playing— and it’s completely free.
