The Scharf Collection

The Scharf Collection is on show for the first time in the Alte Nationalgalerie on this extraordinary scale – around 150 works from one of Germany’s most important private collections. Masters such as Goya, Monet, Cézanne, Degas, Bonnard and Grosse are presented, complemented by French art of the 19th and 20th centuries as well as the graphic oeuvre of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec as a special highlight. The exhibition ranges from Realism and Impressionism to contemporary painting and also tells the fascinating story of the Scharf family of collectors. Klára Hosnedlová: Embrace

In her largest institutional solo exhibition to date, “Embrace”, Klára Hosnedlová focuses on rural regions of today’s Czech Republic. In the historic hall of the Hamburger Bahnhof, she creates an expansive, sculptural scenery from flax fibers, embroidery, cast glass, sandstone, clay, iron and concrete slabs. Elements such as concrete slabs and iron walls refer to the architecture of the communist era. The exhibition is part of the Chanel Commission, an annual initiative that enables artists to realize large-scale projects in the museum’s industrial architecture.

Delcy Morelos: Madre

Delcy Morelos is known for her immersive, sensory sculptures and installations, in which she uses materials such as earth, clay, grass, cinnamon and cloves. She sees art as an interweaving of materials, elements and knowledge, which is clearly reflected in her exhibition.
“Madre” is Delcy Morelos’first solo exhibition in Germany. The Colombian artist presents a large-scale, immersive installation that explores themes such as the earth, indigenous knowledge, regeneration and the connection between humans and nature. Her work reacts directly to the form, light, climate, sound and atmosphere of the exhibition space and enters into a dialog with the actions, sculptures and environments by Joseph Beuys, which can be seen in parallel in the permanent exhibition.

Lygia Clark: Retrospective

This exhibition sheds light on the work of director Margarethe von Trotta (*1942, Berlin). In 1981, she was the first woman to win the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for “Die bleierne Zeit”. This exhibition shows film clips, partly unpublished photographs, script versions and diary pages. Her discussions with thinkers such as Rosa Luxemburg, Hannah Arendt, Hildegard von Bingen and Ingeborg Bachmann are also highlighted. Her ongoing collaboration with actresses such as Angela Winkler, Jutta Lampe and Katja Riemann also plays a role. In her films, von Trotta herself deals with German history, historical female figures and the relationship between the private and the political from a female perspective.

Rico Puhlmann: Fashion Photography 50s-90s

In this exhibition, you can see Rico Puhlmann’s photographs, which are known worldwide and document key aspects of fashion history over the decades. These include the Berlin chic of the post-war period, New York sports and streetwear of the 70s, changing trends, the new self-image of the modeling profession and changing images of women and men. He photographed greats such as Naomi Campbell and many other personalities from the fashion world.
