What could be better than enjoying an impressive view from an architecturally extraordinary structure? Fortunately, there are plenty of options for this around Berlin. From the retro-futuristic observation tower on the Marienberg to the Finkenberg observation tower in the middle of a nature reserve —there’s plenty to choose from if you want to breathe in the fresh air high above the landscape and let your gaze wander. Today we have another tip for you: The Bismarck Tower in Rathenow is one of the most extraordinary Bismarck towers in Germany and ranks among the city’s most famous landmarks. Its striking architecture clearly sets it apart from many other observation towers and makes it an exciting destination just about an hour from Berlin.

The Bismarck Tower in Rathenow rises on the Weinberg hill above Rathenow and offers an impressive view over the Havel lowlands and the entire Havelland region. The observation tower is 34 meters high and was inaugurated on June 21, 1914 . It stands on the Kiekeberg, the highest point of the vineyard. Architecturally, the tower clearly stands out from many other Bismarck towers. It was built in the Neo-Gothic style and is modeled after the Markish Brick Gothic style, which is typical of numerous historic buildings in Brandenburg.
What is particularly remarkable is that the Bismarck Tower in Rathenow does not look like a classic observation tower. Instead, its design is reminiscent of the region’s medieval brick castles and churches. It is precisely this unusual architecture that makes it one of the most architecturally interesting Bismarck towers in Germany. The tower was erected in honor of Otto von Bismarck, the first German Chancellor. It shares a special history with Rathenow, as this is where his political career began, among other things, as a representative of the Rathenow constituency.
The tower’s history itself also holds some interesting details. Originally, the open hall of the structure housed a bronze statue of Bismarck approximately four meters tall. However, this was removed in 1942 and presumably melted down for the arms industry. In the upper section of the tower, there used to be a memorial room dedicated to the Reich Chancellor.

Today, visitors climb stone spiral staircases up to the observation deck, which offers a sweeping view of the Havelland landscape . Since 2008, the tower has even served as a special venue for weddings. The wedding chapel is located high above the city and is accessible via more than 90 steps.
The Bismarck Tower in Rathenow is nestled within the historic park landscape of the Weinberg. As early as the 19th century, the area was a popular destination featuring vineyards, flower gardens, and walking paths. Today, the historic cemetery, various gardens, and the nearby Optikpark are also among the attractions in the area.
