The 11mm Football Film Festival presents great soccer cinema
Berlin has a wonderful cinema scene full of historic movie palaces, quirky theaters, and even the chance to enjoy films while lying down. You can even experience the greatest soundtracks in cinema history live! Until now, however, soccer has been largely absent from the big screen. That’s about to change!
A soccer game may only last 90 minutes, but its impact lasts much longer. This is the motto of this year’s 11mm International Football Film Festival, taking place from 🗓️March 26 to 30, 2026, at the 📍Colosseum Film Theater in Berlin. Look forward to five fantastic festival days featuring over 40 films from 17 countries. The following films show us our favorite sport from a new perspective:
“A Summer in Italy – 1990 World Cup”: The perfect feel-good movie
The festival kicks off on March 26 with the opening film “A Summer in Italy – World Cup 1990” by the director duo Vanessa Goll and Nadja Kölling. The film features never-before-seen private footage of the German men’s national team. A thrilling documentary about the World Cup victory in Italy that earned us the third star on our jerseys. Pure emotion and many familiar faces: Lothar Matthäus, Jürgen Klinsmann, Rudi Völler (aka “Aunt Käthe”), and none other than “Kaiser” Franz Beckenbauer in the role of coach.
This film exudes “Summer Fairy Tale” vibes. Although Germany didn’t make it to the final of the 2006 World Cup, which was later held on home soil, you can make it to the Olympic Stadium instead.
“Shaolin Soccer”: Crazy and cult
A soccer film with a twist. Even before he released his cult classic “Kung Fu Hustle,” the infamous director Stephen Chow made “Shaolin Soccer.” This kung fu extravaganza will be on display in all its glory at the 11mm Festival. Look forward to over-the-top effects and a unique mix of soccer and martial arts. This film shows that soccer can be done differently and will be a blast even for non-soccer fans.
If you want to see more wacky special effects, why not use the time leading up to the film festival to turn your perception upside down in some crazy rooms?
“Heysel 85”: A harrowing drama
The Berlinale film “Heysel 85” will also be screened. A gripping drama about the Heysel disaster during the European Cup match between Liverpool FC and Juventus Turin. This film exposes the dark side of soccer and recounts one of the worst tragedies in the history of the sport.
Selected portraits of true soccer legends

Next up are cinematic portraits of three soccer legends: Luis Enrique, who as coach of Paris Saint-Germain is as provocative as he is brilliant; Kenny Dalglish, the only player to have scored over 100 goals in both the English and Scottish leagues; and Peter Schmeichel, who changed the game of goalkeeping forever with his spectacular saves.
If you’re looking for pure emotion, don’t miss the 11mm Festival in Berlin.
