Even though Berlin is not exactly one of the greenest cities, there are some wonderful places to visit around the capital . Brandenburg is home tofamous castles that transport us to another era, as well as places that are unique in Europe. These include the windmill in Straupitz. It is the only functioning triple mill in Europe.
The “gold of the Spreewald”

As a triple mill, the windmill in Straupitz combines three different crafts under one roof. It is used as a grain mill to grind corn, there is a wind-powered sawmill for cutting tree trunks (the sawmill), and there is also an oil mill. This is what makes this place so special: it is here that the famous Spreewald linseed oil is pressed.
A technology that is over 100 years old is used to produce the linseed oil. The linseed is crushed in a “Kollergang,” roasted in a pan, and finally pressed under enormous pressure. And you can watch it live! The mill operates all day long.
During a visit, you can look over the millers’ shoulders and ask questions about this traditional craft. You can also take part in special guided tours of the mill. Explanatory videos are shown in the grain and saw mill.
Try fresh oil straight from the mill

When visiting the windmill in Straupitz, don’t just settle for a guided tour of the production facilities. You can also taste the fresh, still warm oil on site: either in the traditional way with fresh bread or – the Spreewald classic – with jacket potatoes and quark.
The linseed oil is natural and unfiltered, which means it retains its typical nutty, roasted flavor. Thanks to its high omega-3 content, linseed oil is considered extremely healthy. You can buy the oil, flour, and other regional products as souvenirs in the mill shop.
And besides the famous oil, a trip to the windmill is also simply enjoyable: the miller’s barn offers coffee, cake, and regional dishes with a view of the mill. Admission costs €5.50, and only €2.50 for children and young people.
