An unfinished mountain in Berlin’s Grunewald forest – built from the rubble of 400,000 buildings – once served as a Cold War spy post and is now considered one of the city’s most creative locations. The Teufelsberg was opened to visitors by its private owner in 2011 and has since established itself not only as an extraordinary techno temple with events such as Beatgarten and the Sunset Sessions, but also as the largest legal open-air street art gallery in Europe. While other lost places such as the ICC Berlin usually remain closed to the public – with exceptions such as the “49h ICC ” – Teufelsberg has long since become a popular event location.

The Teufelsberg as an art area
Since the second half of the 2010s, the area has steadily developed into a hotspot for street art. From 2016, its use as a gallery was officially established – with admission, guided tours and an ongoing curated exhibition practice. Works by renowned artists such as El Bocho, Nina Valkhoff, Hera and Dan Kitchener are represented here. Today, Teufelsberg is considered the largest open-air street art gallery in Europe – closely followed by the Telliskivi art area in Tallinn, Estonia.
The presentation of the graffiti and murals is curated: Many works remain visible for months, while new works are regularly created. Admission is currently €12 (reduced €10), open daily from 11:00 to 21:30. From up here, you can enjoy an impressive view over Berlin and the adjacent Grunewald forest. Both inside the former spy station and on the outer facades, you can expect colorful murals, oversized portraits, dystopian scenes and political art in a post-apocalyptic work of art.

During special guided tours and street art tours on the Teufelsberg, you can learn exciting artist stories as well as background information on individual works and the history of the site itself. The site has been a listed building since November 2018 – as a place steeped in history with relics from the Cold War and the post-war period when Berlin piled up its rubble here. History, art and adventure lie above the Teufelsberg and merge here to create a unique vision of the future.
