If you’ve already explored numerous lake regions around Berlin and know everything from turquoise glacial lakes to picturesque lagoons near the city, it’s time for a change of pace. How about a castle? We’ve already told you about the Easter festivities at Storkow Castle. But even outside of events, the historic site has plenty to offer. Here, we’ll tell you why a visit is worth it and what makes the over 800-year-old castle and the surrounding natural and lake landscape so special.

The castle was first mentioned in a document as early as 1209, making it one of the oldest surviving castles in Brandenburg. For more than 800 years, it played an important role as a border fortress, administrative seat, and regional center of power. Over the course of its long history, the complex was destroyed, rebuilt, and restored multiple times. After a severe fire in 1978, the castle remained a ruin for decades before undergoing extensive restoration and revitalization between 2000 and 2009 .
One of the biggest attractions is the castle tower, which stands about 36 meters tall. From its observation deck, a sweeping view opens up over the historic old town of Storkow, Lake Storkow, the surrounding forests, and Brandenburg’s expansive lake landscape. Today, the tower is one of the most popular vantage points in the region.

A special feature of the castle is the visitor center for the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park, located directly within the historic walls. There, visitors learn how the landscape was formed, which animal and plant species are native to the region, and why the lake and forest landscape is among Brandenburg’s most valuable natural areas. In addition, the exhibition provides information on numerous hiking and biking trails that start right in front of the castle.
The Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park covers around 600 square kilometers and is one of the largest contiguous natural areas in Brandenburg. The region is characterized by more than 100 lakes, expansive pine forests, moors, river landscapes, and a dense network of hiking and biking trails. As a result, the area is a popular destination for cyclists, hikers, canoeists, birdwatchers, and swimmers.
