How many more times do you want to go for a walk at Tempelhofer Feld this year? Swap Berlin’s asphalt for mystical vibes and wide-open nature. We’ve got the ultimate secret spot for it ! Forget the crowded swimming lakes in Brandenburg—get ready for a trip back in time to the Slavic Fortress of Raddusch in the Spreewald.
The Slavic Fortress of Raddusch – The wooden UFO in the UNESCO moor

Just under 90 minutes by car from Hermannplatz, a massive, round wooden wall rises from the flat landscape of the Spreewald. From a distance, it looks as if a rustic UFO has landed somewhere in the middle of nowhere .
In fact, the Slavic Fortress of Raddusch is a faithful replica of a ring wall complex over 1,000 years old belonging to the Slavic Lusatian tribes. The contrast between the vast, tranquil natural landscape and this massive structure is surreal! For the fortress is situated right in the middle of the Spreewald UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
(So it’s also worth exploring the surrounding area. More on that in a moment!)
More than just old stones and lots of wood!

Anyone who thinks of dusty display cases and endless text panels when they hear “historical museum” is completely wrong. The interior of the thick wall is completely hollow and has been modernized. The archaeological exhibition transports you to the early Middle Ages with immersive projections and beautifully presented artifacts.
Here you can learn how people lived in harmony with the wild marshlands of the Spreewald a thousand years ago. The whole experience is utterly fascinating, mysterious, and aesthetically appealing.
The perfect day trip flow

The Slavic Fortress Raddusch is the perfect starting point for your day trip. From here, you can wonderfully explore the UNESCO-protected nature of the Spreewald, which also includes the Vetschauer Mühlenfließ. This important ecological corridor provides a valuable and protected habitat for endangered species such as the otter.
Grab a rental bike or hop into a paddleboat. At the mouth of the Vetschauer Mühlenfließ, with a little luck navigating, you might even find “Love Island” ( see picture above)! This spot has also served as a film set for the “Spreewaldkrimi: Mörderische Hitze”…(If you’re in the mood for more crime drama on your way home, check this out!)
So: Conquer the castle, paddle through picture-perfect waters, snack on fresh Spreewald cucumbers, and have a great day!
