SailGP – all information about the event
SailGP is the premier class of sailing racing – an international championship in which national teams compete against each other around the globe in identical high-tech catamarans. Look forward to a spectacular fleet of F50 catamarans racing across the water at breathtaking speeds. The boats reach speeds of up to 100 km/h and are among the fastest racing catamarans ever built. With over three times the wind speed, they deliver a real high-speed spectacle. No wonder the event is also known as “Formula 1 on the water”. This is where high-tech, instinct and pure adrenaline kick meet.
Relaxed sailing day my ass! Experience a festival full of action and thrills. International teams battle for victory on high-tech boats that fly over the waves on hydrofoils. But that’s not all! In addition to the race itself, which will be accompanied by live commentary and on huge video screens, you can expect numerous activities. Discover roaming bands, a SailGP simulator for that extra dose of adrenaline and much more. If your stomachs are rumbling as well as your engines, don’t worry! The numerous food and drink stations will provide you with delicious specialties.
Why Sassnitz is so popular with sailing teams and fans
After stops in cities such as Dubai, New York and Cádiz, Sassnitz is now also on the SailGP calendar. The premiere of the international sailing race series on the Baltic Sea island in summer 2025 was a complete success and one of the most action-packed events of the season. The exciting races offered plenty of thrills, including a speed record of 103.93 km/h set by the Danish ROCKWOOL team.
The Baltic Sea provides ideal conditions with constant wind and a clear view of the water. Another plus point: the races take place close to the shore, so the audience can follow the action up close – without the need for a boat. In addition to the perfect conditions for sailing, Rügen’s harbor town is a popular tourist destination all year round. With its picturesque backdrop and maritime flair, a visit to the SailGP race is twice as worthwhile.
