While the city often appears gray and dreary from below on a cold winter’s day, it takes on a completely new appearance at night when viewed from above. Who isn’t familiar with the Reichstag building, one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks and, as the seat of the German Bundestag, arguably the most important building in the German nation. The historic parliament building dates back to the 19th century and is closely linked to German history – from the German Empire to the Weimar Republic and National Socialism to division and reunification. After reunification, the Reichstag was redesigned: British architect Norman Foster deliberately combined old and new, designing the striking glass dome. It is much more than an architectural statement: as a symbol of the transparency of democracy, it allows visitors a direct view from above into the plenary hall of the German Bundestag. And when the sun goes down, the city lights shine from the Reichstag dome in a very special glow.

With a diameter of 40 meters and a height of 23.5 meters, the steel and glass structure weighs around 800 tons. A colossal mirrored fountain reflects the fading daylight and distributes it over the patented blue seats of the plenary hall. The central, reflective light sculpture directs daylight into the plenary hall and at the same time supports the building’s sustainable energy concept. Two spiral ramps inside the dome allow visitors to walk around it, which is particularly worthwhile in the darkness of the evening. The dome can be visited free of charge until 10 p.m., but prior online registration is required. As visits are very popular, early reservation is recommended.

You will not only find yourself on an impressive viewing platform, but also on a modern landmark that rests on centuries of German history. The contrast between the past and the present is particularly noticeable in the evening. Under the glass dome of the Reichstag building, an almost futuristic feeling arises, allowing you to experience Berlin in a very special way. The central location of the Reichstag dome in the city center and its proximity to some of Berlin’s most important historical sites enhance the 360-degree panoramic view of the city skyline.
If you still can’t get enough of the sparkling lights afterwards, don’t miss Ballet of Lights! A dazzling spectacle of colors and light tells the story of Sleeping Beauty in a new, radiant dimension.
