If you’re seeking the tranquility of Brandenburg’s forests and want to be rewarded with a first-class panorama at the same time, the Rauener Berge are a must-visit. Just a stone’s throw from the sophisticated spa town of Bad Saarow, this striking range of hills rises up and offers one of the most beautiful natural experiences east of Berlin.
On the observation tower – 40 meters above the forest floor
The centerpiece of the region is undoubtedly the Rauener Berge observation tower. Standing a proud 40 meters tall, the steel structure soars far above the tops of the pine and beech trees. Anyone who climbs the steps quickly realizes: the effort is worth it. Once at the top, a magnificent view opens up, stretching far beyond the Märkische Streusandbüchse on clear days. To the south, Scharmützel Lake, the “Märkische Meer,” glistens in the sun, while to the northwest, the Berlin skyline dances on the horizon. Even the striking dome of Tropical Islands can be made out in the distance.

To experience the region in all its splendor, we recommend a varied loop hike of about four hours. The ideal starting point is the hiking parking lot in Rauen. From there, the trail leads steadily uphill through shady mixed forests to the legendary Markgrafensteine. These gigantic boulders—the largest in Brandenburg—are silent witnesses to the last Ice Age and an impressive photo opportunity.
After visiting the stones , the route continues to the observation tower to enjoy the panoramic view. From the top of the tower, the route then leads downhill toward the idyllic spa gardens of Bad Saarow, where you can briefly soak up the maritime atmosphere of Lake Scharmützel before the trail leads back to Rauen via gentle forest paths.
A culinary stop in Bad Saarow

A hike isn’t complete until your palate has been treated as well. Just a stone’s throw from the hiking trails, for example, the cozy “Biergarten am Scharmützelsee” or the laid-back “Beach House Bad Sarrow” in Bad Saarow invite you to take a break.
Here, you can stretch your legs while enjoying authentic Markish cuisine or a juicy burger, a freshly tapped beer, or a homemade spritzer, let your gaze wander over the glistening water, and reflect on the impressions gathered during the tour.
