1. History of the Malzfabrik
The former malting plant of Schultheiss Brauerei AG in Tempelhof was in operation from 1918 to 1996 and was considered Berlin’s largest malting plant. After it was decommissioned, Frank Sippel acquired it in 2005 with the idea of transforming the industrial site into a cultural venue. The malt house, with its distinctive four knight’s helmets on the factory roof, was designated a historic landmark in 1995; the other buildings in the complex are also listed on Berlin’s register of historic landmarks.

Startups, creative firms, artists, and artisans are just a few of the new tenants who have found a home at the Malzfabrik. This green oasis in the heart of the city stands for creativity, culture, and sustainability, offering space for new ideas.
3. The Highlight of the Malzfabrik
The Malzfabrik is known not only for its creative and modern charm but also for its distinctive smoke stacks, also known as “Darrhauben.” These Darrhauben are an important historical feature and stand proudly as a reminder of the site’s industrial history. The Darrhauben were originally used for the kilning process, in which malted barley was dried for use in beer production.
