Berlin’s legendary techno scene was shaken on Thursday night: the well-known club “Wilde Renate” near Ostkreuz caught fire. The so-called “Renate Garden ” was particularly affected – the wooden fence in the entrance area, meter-high trees, a wooden hut and a photo booth were completely destroyed. Dramatic pictures and videos quickly spread online, causing growing concern for the cult club. But the all-clear has now been given: the club itself has remained largely intact, as have the neighboring residential buildings. Fortunately, no one was injured either, as the club’s rooms were empty at the time of the fire, a spokesperson confirmed.
According to the police, a passer-by alerted the fire department at around 2:15 am. The Stralau peninsula was completely cordoned off between 2:21 am and 4:56 am. According to media reports, banging noises were also heard. However, the police emphasized that there was no evidence of explosions. Around 50 firefighters were deployed for several hours and were able to prevent the flames from spreading to larger parts of the club and the surrounding area. The operation was officially ended at 8:31 am. As parties at the “Wilde Renate” usually take place from Thursday to Sunday, it remains unclear how the fire could have started on Wednesday night of all nights. According to the police, deliberate arson cannot be ruled out at present – the investigation is ongoing.
In a statement, it was said that the incident was dramatic – and “[…] just before one of our biggest weekends of the year“. Particularly bitter: the club is threatened with closure at the end of the year and the last Fête de la Musique in the neighborhood was due to take place on this Saturday of all days. But with a little extra effort and reorganization, it still seems possible. Anyone who thought that the doors of the Renate would remain closed for the time being was mistaken: dancing resumed on Thursday evening – the program continued as planned.
