The GDR era isn’t all that long ago, as many different places in Berlin attest. And, of course, there are also historic sites throughout the surrounding area that transport us back to times past. So if you’re looking to take a day trip to learn a bit about German history, the Finowfurt Aviation Museum is the perfect place to start. Situated on the grounds of a former Soviet military airfield, it is now one of the largest and most authentic venues for aviation and technology history in Germany.
Fighter jets from the GDR

As one might expect, the site’s history is deeply rooted in the military conflicts of the 20th century. It was originally built in the 1930s as a factory airfield. After World War II, however, the Red Army took over the site and expanded it into one of the most important bases of the Soviet Air Force in the GDR.
For decades, fighter jets were stationed here, intended to defend the gateway to Berlin in the event of an emergency. After the troops withdrew in the early 1990s, activists saved the site from decay. They built up a collection that today serves as both a memorial and a technology exhibition.
Experience historic aviation technology up close
You can visit this historic site today. At the Finowfurt Aviation Museum, decades of aviation history come to life. On the expansive outdoor grounds, which once served as a strategic outpost during the Cold War, various aircraft are on display—from gliders to supersonic interceptors.
You ’ll walk across the old runways and see the aircraft and vehicles in a state that reflects their long service. The museum has a real “lost place” vibe! It’s open from April through October, and admission for adults is 8 euros.
In addition to aviation, there is also a collection of GDR vehicles, tanks, and firefighting equipment. Regular events such as the “Ostfahrzeugtreffen” (Eastern Vehicle Meet) or air shows transform the quiet grounds into a lively place several times a year.
