On this self-guided tour, we’ll follow in the footsteps of Gerhart Hauptmann and “Railroad Guard Thiel.” The trail takes us through the pine forests of the Mark Brandenburg, along old railroad tracks, all the way to the historic church in Neu Zittau.

From Wilhelmshagen via Erkner to Neu Zittau: A Literary Quest Through Nature
Start your tour at the Wilhelmshagen S-Bahn station (from Berlin via the RE1 or S3). From here , you’ll walk through a dense stretch of forest that hugs the railroad tracks, heading toward Erkner. The clatter of the trains brings the tragic story of railroad guard Thiel to life.
From 1885 to 1889, the young Nobel Prize-winning author Gerhart Hauptmann lived in Erkner. Once you arrive there, it’s worth making a quick stop at the historic Villa Lassen, the former residence of the young Gerhart Hauptmann. (Currently closed to visitors!)
Either along the country road or by the water to Neu Zittau
The classic route heads south along Neu Zittauer Straße. This path takes you directly to the picturesque village church in Neu Zittau, which is deeply intertwined with Hauptmann’s life and work.
If you’re looking for the tranquility of nature, choose the “Water Route” along the Gosener Canal instead. This alternative route follows the canal’s banks, offers magnificent views of the water, and leads you along scenic paths to your destination in Neu Zittau.

After a leisurely walk through the countryside, you’ll finally reach the church in Neu Zittau. This small, brick-built structure is closely linked to the plot of the book.
Thiel accompanied his wife Minna—and later Lene—here. The peaceful quiet of the church square provides a wonderful contrast to the drama of the story and offers the perfect spot for a short break before heading back. (Take bus 423 to the Erkner S-Bahn station)
