Freiburg’s Historic Old Town: Between Freiburg Cathedral and the Famous Bächle

The heart of Freiburg is undoubtedly its picturesque, car-free Old Town. Here, Freiburg’s Bächle trickle through the cobblestone alleys. These small, water-fed channels—fed by the Dreisam River— provide a wonderful way to cool off in the summer.
But be careful while strolling: Legend has it that anyone who accidentally steps into a Bächle must marry someone from Freiburg.(There are definitely worse things!)
Baden’s culture of indulgence: wine, “Henna noch Wirschd?” sausages, and a cozy atmosphere

Sooner or later, your path will inevitably lead you to Freiburg Cathedral, the city’s picturesque landmark. Its delicate tower rises majestically above the rooftops, and you can climb it every day.
An absolute must-see is the Münstermarkt, which takes place daily until 1:30 p.m. (Saturdays until 2:00 p.m., closed Sundays) on Münsterplatz. Here, you absolutely must try the “Lange Rote” at Meier’s sausage stand —the legendary Freiburg bratwurst.
Out into nature: A walk up the Schlossberg

What makes Freiburg such a special destination is the seamless transition between the city and the Black Forest (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). The ascent up the Schlossberg begins right at the Schwabentor. If you want to give your legs a break, just take the Schlossbergbahn.
Once you reach the top of the wooded hill, the Schlossberg Tower rewards you with a view of the Black Forest and the distant Vosges Mountains in France. Especially at sunset, when the entire city is bathed in golden light, this is the perfect place to take a deep breath.
Delicious Baden cuisine after a great day

After an extensive sightseeing tour, a cool mountain breeze (the “Höllentäler”) sweeps through the city, heralding the start of the evening. It’s time to stop for a bite and celebrate the evening with a “Badisch Dreierlei” (sausage salad, Brägele, and Bibiliskäs) and a glass of Grauburgunder in good company.
